What is somatic guidance?

The core wound we all suffer from is disconnection from our own being.
— John Welwood, Toward a Psychology of Awakening

Most of us come into this world with a sense of wholeness and feeling connected to everything. Then our parents, family, and society teach and train us in what is acceptable and what isn’t. This is often useful, well-intended and helps keep us safe but also results in us holding, containing, and reacting with self-aggression to what is natural.

During this conditioning process, we start identifying with the things that are rewarded and dis-identifying with the things that are discouraged and/or punished. This conditioning process can leave us cut off from our wholeness. Our brains intelligently rewire themselves in order for us to survive and we develop strategies and patterns designed to keep us safe. Unfortunately, many of us come out of this experience believing there is something wrong with us, but that is not actually the case.

Because this occurs as we are growing, it affects how our bodies develop. This experience remains in the body energetically and can be experienced as anxiety, depression, tension, tightness, or numbness.

As your strategies become clear, so do the difficulties that require healing. Seeing the strategies allows you to loosen your identification with them. This helps restore energetic balance, flow, and well-being to the body. It also creates the opportunity to connect with your true nature and essence.

Somatic guidance uses your body sensations and energetic experiences in the present moment combined with developmental theory to explore and identify the strategies you use to stay safe. Since these strategies are usually formed early in life, they often are out of date and no longer serving you well. This somatic approach is designed to re-tune your system to its original state to help you thrive and flourish.
